Welcome to the Thornhill Medical Practice

Thornhill Medical Practice is based in Thornhill Health Centre.  Our semi-rural practice comprises two permanent GP partners, with occasional locums, and delivers care to around 3700 patients.  Serving the village of Thornhill and surrounding villages of Auldgirth, Carronbridge, Closeburn, Durisdeer, Gatelawbridge, Keir and Penpont.

Our Primary Health Care Team works to provide our patients with comprehensive medical services of the highest possible quality.  We are a Training practice for ScotGEM medical students, Foundation Year doctors and GP Registrars who join us to gain experience in general practice.  Our GP trainees are closely supervised by Dr Ishmael and Dr Osmond, so you will only be seeing them if they feel that they are safe and competent to do so.

In our team we also have an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, and regular Pharmacist, Physiotherapy and Community Mental Health Nurse clinics.  We have a Practice Nurse and an attached team of Community Nurses, Community Midwives and Health Visitors.

Visiting Specialist Clinics in  CAMHS, Psychology, Self Help and Drug & Alcohol team  are held at regular intervals.

‘One Appointment, One Problem’

At Thornhill Medical Practice, we follow a ‘One Appointment, One Problem’ policy to help ensure the highest standard of clinical safety.

We understand that it can sometimes be difficult to get an appointment, and as a result, some patients try to address several issues in a single visit. However, this can compromise the quality of care and increase the risk of something important being missed.

Appointments are typically 10-15 minutes long. This time includes:

  • Getting settled in the consultation room
  • Explaining your symptoms
  • Undergoing any necessary examination
  • Receiving advice or treatment
  • Clinicians completing documentation, referrals, and test requests

Discussing one issue can take the full time available and when multiple concerns are raised, it can pressure the clinician to rush, potentially leading to missed information or errors, and delays for other patients.

We kindly ask all patients to use GP appointments responsibly by discussing one issue per appointment. This allows us to provide focused, safe, and effective care for everyone.

If you feel you need to discuss more than one problem, please speak to reception in advance to book a double appointment.

Please don’t be offended if your doctor asks you to book a follow-up for additional issues—this is done with your safety and well-being in mind.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

NOTICES

ScotGEM Medical Student

We currently have a  ScotGEM Medical student, Laura Webster in the practice as part of their medical school training.

Training Practice

We are a training practice for both ScotGEM medical students, Foundation Year doctors and GP trainees.

ScotGEM medical students are in their 4th year of study at the University of Dundee. They will sometimes be sitting in observing the staff at the practice, however at times you might be asked to consult with them individually.  Gaining experience helping ‘real’ patients under supervision remains the most important way in which doctors learn.

Foundation Year doctors are fully qualified doctors who have spent a year working in a hospital environment. They spend four months in general practice as part of their continuing development.

GP trainees are all fully qualified doctors who have spent at least two years completing junior doctor training in hospitals and are now starting specialist training in General Practice. This training takes place over 3 or 4 years with at least 18 months spent in General Practice.

Trainees occasionally need to video consultations as part of their training and assessment. You will be informed beforehand if videoing is planned and this will only be done if you are happy to do so. If you do not wish to be recorded, this will not affect your consultation. There will be no recording of intimate examinations and the camera can be switched off on request. All video consultations are deleted as soon as they have been assessed – usually within a week.

If you would like a copy of our Complaints Policy please contact Thornhill Medical Practice by phone or email.
